The Cardigans mit Stop in Wien. Im Gespräch mit britishrock

The Cardigans hatten in Wien einen Stopp gemacht, um die Wiener Arena, wahrhaftig zu verzaubern, mit zum großteils Songs aus ihrem aktuellen Album "Super Extra Gravity" und dem Vorgänger "Long gone before Daylight" im Gepäck. Wer auch immer "The Cardigans" auf eine seichte Zuckerwatte-Band reduzierte, dem kann ich nur sagen, die Cardigans haben schon vor 10 Jahren mit den Foo Fighters in der Arena gespielt. Ja,stille Wasser sind tief, sogar oft abgrund tief.

Zugegebenermaßen, sie haben keine Bandmitglieder die die Rock-History auf den Kopf gestellt haben. Aber das brauchen The Cardigans auch gar nicht.The Cardigans besitzen eine tolle Fähigkeit, und zwar Songs zu schreiben, mit unglaublichen wunderbaren Melodien, die sich einfach im Gehörgang festsetzen, und da einfach nicht mehr rausgehen wollen. Woher ich das weiß? Ich habe es an mir selbst festgestellt. Ich dachte bei den Cardigans immer nur an " Lovefool". Mehr fiel mir nicht ein. Dann bin ich beim Konzert und kenne fast über die Hälfte der Setlist, und bei fast jeden konnte ich mitsingen und war überrascht wie meisterhaft sich die Band zwischen Rockriffs von "Erase and Rewind" und Balladen wie "For what it`s worth", oder "Don´t blame your daughter" präsentierten, ohne auch noch ein Fünkchen ihres Charmes zu verlieren.

Und so nebenbei es hat sich ein Klischee bestätigt. Schweden sehen einfach gut aus. Nina Persson sieht sogar bei Tageslicht besser aus, als wie 95 % der restlichen überdurchschnittlichen gutaussehenden Schweden.

Bei dem Interview zitterte ein Kollege neben mir sogar sehr verdächtig mit dem Mikrophon, als er Nina eine Frage stellte. War er wegen ihr nervös, oder weil die Band uns gegenüber doch ein wenig "unterkühlt" wirkte? Anfangs stand das typische Frage-Antwort-Spiel im Raum, was sich jedoch sehr schnell in eine lockere Atmospäre umwandelte, kurz gesagt "auftaute".

(Versprochen, die letzte schlechte Anspielung auf das Klima in Schweden).

Ich laß in einem Interview mit Nina, das sie sehr gerne behandelt wird wie ein Popstar, denn sie ist ja auch einer. Na dass kann ja lustig werden, dachte ich mir.

Doch schon bei der ersten Begrüßung merkte ich, dass uns da keine zickigen Musikstars gegen übersitzen, sondern "Musiker aus Leidenschaft", die bestimmt auftreten, aber keinesfalls arrogant wirken.

Ein Wort das immer wieder gefallen ist, war "happy". The Cardigans scheinen glücklich zu sein, mit sich selbst und ihrer Musik, trotz oder gerade deswegen, weil sie nicht mehr an den breiten kommerziellen Erfolg von "Lovefool" herankommen.

Während den Arbeiten zu ihrem letzten Album "Long gone before daylight" hätten sich The Cardigans fast aufgelöst. Doch sie scheinen wieder ihren Weg gefunden haben.

The Cardigans wurden in der Arena von dem Österreicher Florian Horvath untersützt, und dieser konnten Magnus, den Basspieler der Cardigans, für ihren letzten Song gewinnen. Während des Auftrittes sah ich mich mal im Publikum um, The Cardigans sprechen so ziemlich alle Zielgruppen an, habe ich festgestellt, vom tätowierten Hardrocker über MTV-Girlie zur Kunstudentin, bis hin zu älteren Semester, alle waren sie da und haben eine großartige Show von den gutaufgelegten Schweden bekommen.

Die Band hatte das Publikum im Griff, eine gelungene Mischung aus ihren letzten drei Alben.

Wer The Cardigans nach diesem Konzert nicht noch ein bisschen toller fand, dem ist wahrlich nicht zu helfen.

Nina Perrson weiß wie man die Blicke auf sich lenkt.

Eine schwarze Corsage, kombiniert mit schwarzer Hose und Stiefel. Keine Spur von einer naiven Blondine die wartet, dass ihr jemand "Love Me" ins Ohr haucht, stattdessen singt sie "I need some fine wine, and you, you need to be nicer".

Der tanzende und optische Höhepunkt war "My favourite game". Ich schätze Peter Svennson, ein unterschätzter Gitarrengott, hat damit ein Lied geschaffem, welches noch sehr viele junge Menschen zu einer Gitarre greifen läßt.

Sogar zu einer 2. Zugabe ließ sich die Band hinreissen, als die Menge noch mehr wollte. Nina kommentierte das Anliegen des Publikums mit einem augenzwinkernden Kommentar:

"You are a bunch of motherfuckers". Als Abschluss spielten sie "Communication" laut Nina " The most important song of The Cardigans".

"The world is full of diamonds, go out and find them" (Don´t blame your daughter). The Cardigans sind da sicherlich ein ganz besonders funkelnder Diamant in der Pop-Industrie.

INTERVIEW:

When I think of old time classics like „ Rise and Shine“ or „Carneval“ , long-time fans would like to hear the songs? (Radio Orange)

Nina: Im shure they do (laughs)

Peter: If you listen, every other album is different, compared to other bands, I think we really allowed ourselves to move on. The songs we chose for this tour, I think it really makes the show better itself.

Nina: I don´t think that there´s a great expectation of playing this songs,a greatest hits delivery. If you would call it a "Greatest Hits", than fine, but actually it´s a tour for our last album "Super Extra gravitiy".

You are now together for over 14 years, what gives you the drive and the engagement, to keep on touring and recording albums? (Britishrock)

Nina: The funny thing is, we haven´t it for 5-7 years ago. I don´t know, we have have just right now a better time, I think we´re more focused to make music that lives longer with us, we learned.

Do the Solo-projects like A-camp influence the whole creative process of the band, or do you try to keep it outside of the band? (Britishrock)

Nina: I think it really does, that the time we spent not working with the band, is extremely important as well, whatever you choose to do, travelling or staying with your family. It always matters, it makes you a happier person.

Peter, as far as I know you are the only songwriter in the band, Nina you made your solo-projects, Magnus also. Didn´t you want to integrate the songs of each solo-projects? (FM5)

Peter: No they can´t ( laughs)

Nina: To be honest, I just can´t speak for myself right now, but I just wouldn´t want to. We all wrting songs, but they are not represting they typical Cardigan-songs.

Peter: Of course, after many years you kinda stuck in your roles in the band. When Magnus comes up to with me, with a song he had wrote, how I´m gonna react on this? It´s kinda tricky, how can I approach him, without hurting him. When I´m gonna tell him, that I don´t like his songs, hows that gonna sound for Magnus? Sometimes its hard to find the way between, ´cause when I´m not gonna feel so good about my songwriting, I would wish , that someone else did it.

Nina: And I think, we are a quiete a stable band, cause we collect experiences outside the band, through our solo-projects. We all kinda flown by time in our roles in the band, we know what we can do best and try to concentrate on it. We are quiete a social-democratic band. With the solo projects, we can test ourselves.

You sing on a tribute album for Serge Gainsbourg (Anm: she sings on a limited Vinyl Publication) , which should be published in May. You sing "Angels Fall" with your husband. How did that come around? (Britishrock)

Nina: To be honest, we are friends with the people, who made this album (laughs). We were asked to do this, along with other artists, and then we found this old recording. It was a recording, which Serge did with David Bowie, but never was released. And this projects are also a nice opportunity, to experimental a little bit. And it was the first I did speak.

Oh did you make a rap?

Nina. No (laughs). I´m speaking in the french tradition, you know "speaking sexy".

I know this sexy french accent.

Nina: Well, it was embarrasing the whole time we did the recording. But it was funny too.

Peter, I´ve read that you collect guitars and that you have so far over hundred. (Britishrock)

Peter: yeah I think so

Nina: No, that was 2 years ago (both laugh)

Peter: As I was a kid, I popped into a music- instrument store and was fascinated of all this cool guitars.As we got the first paid check, I bought one and knew exactly, that I´m gonna collect guitars. And of course it went bizarre.

Nina: I´m a little bit jeaolous, I wish I could find something like Peter. I spend my money on things, and the value of this things go totally down the train within 2 days.To collect guitars is a great thing, and it´s increases a value too.

After all this years, are you still nervous before going on stage (Antenne Steiermark)

Peter: Well, not really. But when I think back on the start of the tour, you are playing news songs, which that you never ever haven´t played before an audience, there´s something new happening, then everybody is a little bit nervous, including myself. But it´s not a feeling that stands you in the way.

Nina: I think as Peter mentioned, it´s not a bad feeling. You really get focused on what you are doing. If somebody would tell us, 5 minutes before the show, that the gig would´nt happening, I think I would go out an kill somebody (smiles). To be really nervous all the time, it just destroys, it makes you weird.

What are your favorite acts in the recent time?(Antenne Steiermark)

Nina: Martha Wainwright is a genius, Jenny Luis, I think what that girl is doing is really great, I´m really into the White Stripes, and also the Raconteurs ( Anm: a project of Jack White and Brendon Benson)

what else.... It´s not really a new act, but I loove Morrissey.

Some artists say, that there last album was the best album in the history of the band. What do you think about " Super extra gravitiy"? (FM5)

Peter: The things that I like with the new album, I don´t like on the last one and other way around, if I could put this 2 together, that would be really great.

But I think our actual album have some really greath highs.

Do you have any favourite Cardigans albums or song? (FM5)

Peter: Well, mhh, my favourite song or album... it varies a little bit, but any of the ballads I think, "Don´t blame your daughter"is great.

As favourite album I would pick " Long gone before daylight". When I think back on all the struggle we had as a band and the hard time we went trough, and then we came up with an album like " Long Gone before daylight" it reminds me of so much thoughts. That´s why, I would choose it.

I remember you played a gig here in the arena 10 years ago with the Foo Fighters. Do you remember it? (Radio Orange)

Nina: Oh i was a out door-gig, but I hardly remember anything (laughs)

Peter: I remember that we did it, but basiclly on no details. They were probably good.

Would you ever support Robbie Williams again? (Britishrock)

Nina: Nothing against Robbie Williams, but I think it was a quiet a shitty experience (both laugh).

Peter: We supported him for 2 or 3 shows. I think what he´s doing is whole lotta different to us. I would definetly again support bands everytime.It just should be a crowd, where we also have the chance that there´s a chance that people out of the audience buy your album.

Nina: We really hadn´t the feeling, that we recrutied a whole lot of new fans. The stage was amazing, we just had 2 meters infront of Robbie´s set and there was not even a chance, that we could stand the drums behind us. We all stood in a row and played our show.

Peter: The stage was huge. Magnus stood on the other side of the stage and I hardly could saw him, I would have needed glasses to see him.

Nina: To answer finally your question. No we wouldn´t support him ever again ( both laugh).
